On several days in January/early February, 1973 four cultivars were sampled for leaf relative water content (LRWC) at 10.30 am. It was interesting to note that irrespective of the evaporative demand the cultivars maintained the same ranking i.e. Hark had a higher LRWC > SRF 300 > Bethel > Clark 63. The range was a great as 10% and the lowest value recorded was 73%. Many of the measured values were below 90% (note time of sampling) and hence net photosynthesis would have been below maximal. This data helped to formulate the research outlined below. |
